Industry Standards and Certifications

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency neither approves nor endorses home water treatment units.  However, the states of California, Wisconsin, and Iowa require the registration of drinking water treatment devices for which health effect claims are made.  The states requiring registration of drinking water treatment units rely on the standards set by NSF International to evaluate the performance of the devices they register.

NSF International is an independent, not-for-profit organization that develops and adopts voluntary consensus standards and testing programs for a wide variety of consumer products, including home water treatment units.  NSF offers objective, third-party evaluation of products against NSF standards and government regulations.

NSF is widely recognized for its scientific and technical expertise in the health and environmental sciences. Its professional staff includes engineers, chemists, toxicologists, and environmental health professionals with broad experience both in public and private organizations.

NSF has earned the Collaborating Center designations by the World Health Organization (WHO) for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment.
